"The pumpkin is turning orange!" Boyd exclaimed yesterday. I went over to see for myself. And sure enough, there under the huge leaves on the vine I could see the beginnings of an orange hue on the dark green pumpkin. I love growing pumpkins and squash (although we have not had much success with the squash this year). I love watching the plant grow from a small seed stretching its vine outside the bounds of the garden onto the lawn and up the stone wall. I love how huge the leaves are - so big a small dog can hide behind one! I love discovering the first blossom that yields itself to fruit.
To me, pumpkins are just one of the many miracles of summer. Over these summer months Boyd and I have experienced many miracles - the delicious taste of fresh seafood, the smell of ocean air, the joy of family reunions, the delight of grandchildren, the poignancy of lives beginning and ending. This is all soul stuff. The re-creating time of summer feeds our souls and deepens our experience of the sacred among us. In the midst of the gamut of experiences and feelings we have shared as a congregation this summer may you know the blessing of the Creative Spirit within you and around you. Come to church on Sunday at 9:30 for communion and when you are there tell someone about the miracle you discovered this summer. I will be away from August 29 to September 13. Boyd and I are going to Scotland to visit with long time friends and explore the miracles of that beautiful country.
